You can connect to a VPN on Windows through a separate app or a built-in system profile. The method depends on the format provided by the service. A subscription link for a client does not automatically become a server address for Windows settings.

If you are still comparing methods, first read the overview of a VPN client and the built-in Windows profile. This guide answers the next question: once you have received access, how do you add it to Windows correctly and check the result? The general differences between apps and protocols are explained on the VPN client selection page.

First, Identify What You Were Given

Do not begin the setup until you have matched the information to the appropriate method.

| What you received | How to proceed | | ---------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | | App name and account login | Install the specified app from an official source | | Subscription link or personal import link | Open or paste it only in a compatible client named in the instructions | | Configuration file | Import the file into a client that supports its format | | QR code | Use the scanning or import feature if the client provides one | | Server address, VPN type, and login details | Create a built-in Windows profile | | Only the word “key,” without a client or protocol name | Ask the party that provided access which app and format to use |

A link, file, QR code, and password may grant access in your name. Do not publish them in a chat, review, or error screenshot.

Prepare the Computer

  1. Check the internet connection without the VPN.
  2. Install available Windows updates.
  3. Open your personal instructions and compare them with the table above.
  4. Find the client’s official source or the complete set of system settings.
  5. Prepare a folder accessible only to your account if you need to store the configuration temporarily.

Do not send the configuration file through an open channel or keep it in a shared folder. It may contain access credentials.

Option 1. Client App

Download the installer from the link in the official instructions. Before running it, compare the domain, publisher name, and digital signature. A detailed check is described in “Download a VPN for PC: Checking the Installer”.

If Windows or security software warns you about an unknown publisher, do not disable protection automatically. Return to the source and ask support to confirm the file name, version, and expected publisher.

After installation, open the client and add access using one of the confirmed methods.

Account Login

  1. Open the official app.
  2. Enter your details only on the client’s own screen or a confirmed login page.
  3. Select the profile you were given if the app shows several options.
  4. Confirm the system request to change network settings.

Subscription Link

  1. Copy the complete link from your account or personal instructions.
  2. In the client, find “Add subscription,” “Import from URL,” or a similar action.
  3. Paste the link and wait for the profile to load.
  4. Check that the expected connection name appears rather than an empty entry.

If the link opens in a browser as text or a file, this does not mean it should work as a regular web page. Return to the app and use its import feature.

Configuration File

  1. Do not change the file extension or contents manually.
  2. Open the client’s file import feature.
  3. Select the saved file and confirm that you want to add the profile.
  4. After a successful import, remove unnecessary copies from shared folders and Downloads.

A file for one protocol cannot be assumed to be compatible with another merely because it contains a similar set of characters. If the client rejects the file, compare the app name and format with the instructions.

QR Code

Use the QR code only in a client that explicitly supports this type of import. On a computer, the app may offer camera scanning or image upload; the specific option depends on the client. Do not send the QR code image to an unrelated online scanner.

If your version of the app shows different fields or actions, do not guess the format—request current instructions.

Option 2. Built-in Windows Profile

Use this option only when the service has provided a server address, a VPN type supported by Windows, and login details.

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → VPN → Add VPN.
  2. In the provider field, select the built-in Windows option if the instructions specify it.
  3. Give the connection a clear name so you do not confuse work and personal profiles.
  4. Enter the server address, VPN type, and sign-in method without changing them.
  5. Save the profile, open it, and select “Connect.”

Microsoft states that manual setup requires you to know the VPN type used by the organization or service. The official procedure is available in Windows Help.

If you were given a link for a separate client, do not paste it into the server address field. If the required type is not in the list, the built-in profile is incompatible with the format provided.

Test the Connection

After enabling the VPN, run a short test. Check one item at a time so you can identify the step at which a failure appears:

  1. check the status in the client or the Windows VPN section;
  2. open several HTTPS websites;
  3. launch the work app you need;
  4. disconnect and reconnect the VPN;
  5. test reconnection after restarting the client;
  6. make sure the regular internet connection returns after disconnecting.

A “Connected” status does not prove that DNS and routes are working correctly. If the tunnel is active but pages do not open, use the no-internet connection troubleshooting guide.

Common Errors

The app does not import the configuration. Check the file or link format and the client version. Do not change the file extension manually.

Windows rejects the login details. Check the keyboard layout, letter case, access period, and selected profile. Do not make dozens of attempts with different passwords.

The connection drops immediately. Check another network, the system time, and whether a second VPN client is running. Record the error message before reinstalling.

There is no internet after connecting to the VPN. Disconnect the tunnel, check the original network, and only then investigate DNS, routing, and client settings. Do not reset all network adapters as the first step.

The connection works on one network but not another. Record the type of both networks and the error message. Do not change the protocol, DNS, and app at the same time, or it will be impossible to determine the cause.

The profile disappeared after an update. First check the profile list and the login method in the app. Do not import the same configuration repeatedly; request it again or restore access if necessary.

The complete procedure for connection failures and disconnections is in “VPN Not Working”.

Updating, Reconnecting, and Removing Are Different Actions

Updating the client changes the app but does not necessarily extend access. Updating a subscription or profile changes server-side data but does not replace the app. Reconnecting only restarts the current tunnel.

Before removing the client, make sure you know how to restore the profile. If you no longer need access, disconnect, remove the profile using the app’s or Windows’ standard tools, and only then uninstall the program. On a work computer, first have the action approved by the administrator.

Do Not Mix Work and Personal Access

If the computer is managed by an employer, use only the approved corporate client and the administrator’s instructions. Installing a second VPN may conflict with the organization’s policies, certificates, and routes. Do not remove a corporate profile to test a personal service.

On a personal computer, remove an old client only after saving the recovery information and confirming that it is no longer in use.

What to Tell Support

Provide the Windows edition and version, client name and version, method used to add access, network type, when the problem appeared, and the exact error message. It is useful to state whether the regular internet connection works without the VPN and whether the problem occurs on another network. Do not send the full configuration file, password, subscription link, or a screenshot containing a key without an agreed secure transfer method.

Phone instructions are available for Android and iPhone. Check the current access terms in the pricing section, and the confirmed contents in the subscription article.

Short Checklist

  • the connection method matches the information provided;
  • the app was downloaded from the official page;
  • the profile was added without manually changing the key or file;
  • websites and required programs work after connecting;
  • the regular internet connection returns after disconnecting;
  • secret data was not included in a shared folder or screenshot.

If every item is complete, save the official instructions and a way to restore access. If not, stop at the first unsuccessful step and report it to support.
