This guide is for situations where VPN access has already been arranged and the provider has supplied iOS instructions. If you are still comparing apps and profiles, first read “VPN on iPhone: Choosing and Connecting”.

On iPhone, access can be added through the service's own app, a general-purpose client, a configuration profile, or system settings. These methods are not interchangeable. A link intended for one client may not open in another, and settings intended for an app cannot be transferred automatically to the system form. The general distinction between a service and an app is explained in the guide to choosing a VPN client.

Before You Begin

Gather the following information in one place, but do not share it with anyone:

| What you need to know | Where to check | | --------------------- | -------------- | | Recommended app | The access message or official instructions | | Client developer | The App Store listing | | Supported iOS versions | The app's compatibility section | | Access format | Account, link, file, QR code, profile, or manual fields | | Expiration date | Your account or the provider's message | | Recovery method | The service terms or support |

Before configuring anything, open several websites with the VPN turned off. This separates a problem with the underlying network from an error in the future connection. If Wi-Fi or mobile internet is already not working, restore the regular connection first.

The configuration may contain a secret. Conceal the link, QR code, password, and private key in screenshots. Do not upload them to online checking tools or post them in messages.

Scenario A: Access Is Added to an App

Find the Right Client

Follow the link in the documentation to the App Store. Check the seller, website, support address, iOS requirements, and update history. If you found the client through search, an identical icon or similar name is not a substitute for this check.

If the instructions specify Happ, first review the official listing and limitations in the Happ VPN app overview. The client name alone does not confirm compatibility with the configuration you received.

Read the App Privacy section and the developer's policy. The listing shows the declared data categories, but it does not by itself prove compatibility with your configuration. That compatibility must be confirmed by the access provider and the client's documentation.

Import Access Using the Specified Method

After installation, open the exact option named in the instructions:

  • Account or activation code. Sign in on the app's official screen. Do not give a one-time code to anyone else. After signing in, check whether the issued access appears.
  • Subscription link. Copy the entire address and paste it into the client's add-subscription feature. If the client reports an unsupported format, do not convert the link on a third-party website.
  • File. Save the file in the Files app, then use the import feature in the required client. Do not choose another app just because it appears in the Share menu.
  • QR code. Scan it with the VPN client's built-in camera. If the code is displayed on the same iPhone, use the app's image import feature or a trusted second screen.

After importing, check the name of the added entry. If an old profile remains alongside it, do not delete it yet: first make sure the new access can connect successfully.

Allow iOS to Create the VPN

When you start the connection for the first time, iOS displays a system prompt to add a VPN configuration. The name in the prompt should match the client you opened. Approve the action using the system method only after confirming this.

It is better to cancel an unexpected prompt from another app. An active VPN, network filter, or corporate management profile may affect the result, so make a note of any network-related apps already installed.

Scenario B: You Received a Configuration Profile

A profile is installed differently from a regular app. Download it only from the address specified by the provider or administrator. Apple states that a downloaded profile appears in Settings and is deleted if you do not complete the installation within the period set by the system.

Before approving it, open the profile details and check the source, its signature if present, and the list of settings it will add. A signature alone does not explain the profile's purpose or replace trust in the publisher.

After installation, you can find the entry under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. On a managed work or school iPhone, changes may be controlled by the organization. Do not remove such a profile without the administrator.

If the downloaded profile does not appear, return to the original instructions. Do not download multiple copies from different messages, as this makes it easy to confuse the current and outdated configurations.

Scenario C: You Received Manual Settings

This option applies when the provider has specified the connection type and supplied all required values. In the iOS system form, enter the server address, authentication method, account name, and other fields without changing the protocol yourself.

A subscription link or QR code for a specialized client is not a set of manual settings. If the required type is not available in system settings, stop and ask which app is compatible instead of choosing a similar-looking option.

Testing the Result on iPhone

Check actual operation, not just the “Connected” label:

  1. Check the status in both the client and iOS settings.
  2. Open two or three regular HTTPS websites.
  3. Launch the app that required the connection.
  4. Lock the screen, then return to the client and check its status.
  5. Switch from Wi-Fi to a mobile network and reconnect.
  6. Turn off the VPN and make sure the original internet connection is restored.

The connection status means that iOS has created a tunnel, but it does not guarantee that the server is available or that traffic is passing through it. If the VPN icon appears but pages do not load, use the separate troubleshooting guide for a connection with no internet.

Reconnecting and Updating

Turn off the connection in the client, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. After restarting the iPhone, check whether the profile and sign-in state were retained, whether an old entry became active, and whether you know how to obtain a new configuration.

Before updating, find out whether a new link replaces the existing subscription or creates a second one. Test the new entry first. Delete the old one only after confirming that you will no longer need to restore it.

Deleting the app, deleting the VPN profile, and canceling payment are three different operations. If the subscription was purchased through the App Store, an account page, or another payment channel, check the cancellation rules there.

If the Connection Cannot Be Established

First identify the stage at which it fails:

  • the app will not install;
  • the access cannot be imported;
  • iOS does not display the system prompt;
  • the connection starts and immediately stops;
  • the status is active, but no data is transferred.

Then check the regular network, access expiration date, client version, and whether the format matches the instructions. Try one other network and write down the exact message. Do not change the app, profile, DNS, and other network settings at the same time: after a series of changes, the cause will be unclear.

Leave resetting network settings as the final system-level action, after reviewing Apple's instructions and the consequences for stored data. It removes saved Wi-Fi networks, cellular settings, VPN settings, and APNs, but does not guarantee that a third-party client will be fixed. For disconnections and tunnel creation errors, see “Why a VPN Is Not Working”.

Information for Support

Provide the iPhone model, iOS version, client name and version, network type, chosen import method, stage of the error, and time it last worked successfully. Include the message text without the configuration or payment details.

Current contact options are listed on the support page. To connect another phone, start with the main guide to choosing a VPN for Android, then open the separate Android setup guide.
