To connect to a VPN on Android, you need valid access and instructions for the specific connection method. One service may require you to sign in to its own app, another may provide a link or file for a universal client, while a third may issue settings for a system profile. These options cannot be substituted for one another without confirmed compatibility.

If you have not selected access yet, start with “VPN for Android: Choosing and Connecting”. This guide is intended for situations where you have already received access and know the recommended client or system profile type.

What to Prepare Before Connecting

  1. Check that the regular internet connection works without the VPN over Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
  2. Open the instructions provided with your access.
  3. Find the exact client name and its official installation source.
  4. Identify the access format: account, link, file, QR code, or manual settings.
  5. Make sure the access has not expired.
  6. Update Android and Google Play if standard updates are available for the device.

Do not publish the configuration. A subscription link, QR code, file, password, or private key may allow someone else to connect on your behalf.

Step 1. Install the Recommended Client

Open the app using the link in the official instructions. Compare the developer name, website, privacy policy, and support address. A similar name or icon does not confirm a connection to the service.

If you have to search for the app manually, use the checks in “How to Download a VPN Safely on Android”. Do not disable Play Protect for an unknown APK or install modified versions from chats.

After installation, do not automatically grant access to every feature on the phone. A system request to create a VPN connection is expected. Access to contacts, SMS, the microphone, photos, or location should have a clear explanation based on the app’s functionality.

Step 2. Add the Access You Received

Use only the scenario specified in your instructions.

Sign In with an Account or Activation Code

Open the service’s app, sign in to the account that was created, or enter the activation code. Check the address of the sign-in page and do not share a one-time code with anyone. After you sign in, the app should show the active plan or available connections.

Subscription Link

Copy the entire link and paste it into the recommended client’s import function. Check that no spaces have been added at the beginning or end. Do not open the link through a third-party converter or send it to a public chat.

After import, the client may display one or more profiles. Choose a profile according to the provider’s instructions rather than trying servers and protocols at random.

Configuration File

Download the file from a verified source and open it directly in the client. If Android offers several apps, select only the recommended one. Do not upload the configuration to websites for “checking” or conversion.

After a successful import, delete extra copies of the file from the Downloads folder unless the provider requires you to keep a backup. Before deleting it, make sure you know where to obtain the configuration again.

QR Code

Open the scanning function inside the VPN client and point the camera at the code. Do not save the QR code in a shared photo gallery or display it in a screen recording. If the client asks for camera access, the permission is needed only for scanning.

Manual Settings

For a system profile or compatible client, copy the values exactly: VPN type, server address, profile name, identifier, username, password, and any other fields provided. The set of parameters depends on the connection method. Do not guess values for missing fields.

Step 3. Confirm the Android System Prompt

When you enable the connection for the first time, Android displays a dialog with the app name and a request to create a VPN connection. Verify the client name and confirm the action. Once the connection is established, the system usually shows a VPN icon in the status bar.

If a different app triggers the prompt, cancel the action and check which client is open. Two apps should not manage the same system VPN connection at the same time.

Separate Scenario: Android System Profile

Google describes the following general path:

  1. Open “Settings.”
  2. Go to “Network & internet.”
  3. Open “VPN.”
  4. Tap the option to add a profile.
  5. Enter the settings provided by the administrator or service.
  6. Save the profile and select it to connect.

Section names may differ on Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and other Android variants. Search for VPN in Settings. If the built-in list does not include the format you were issued, return to the app specified in the instructions. Do not select a different type simply because it is available in the menu.

Step 4. Check the Connection

Check each item in order:

  1. The client shows an active connection without an error.
  2. The VPN icon appears in the status bar.
  3. Several ordinary HTTPS websites open.
  4. The app that required the connection works.
  5. The connection recovers after switching from Wi-Fi to a mobile network.
  6. The regular internet connection continues to work after the VPN is disconnected.

The VPN icon confirms that a system connection has been created, but it does not guarantee that the server is responding or that traffic is being routed correctly. If the icon is visible but pages do not load, open “VPN Is Connected, but There Is No Internet”.

Step 5. Test Reconnection

Disconnect the VPN inside the client, wait a few seconds, and enable it again. Then restart the phone and check:

  • whether the profile was saved;
  • whether you need to sign in again;
  • whether the VPN starts manually;
  • whether it is clear how to update the configuration;
  • whether an old profile has become active.

If the new access was imported over the previous one, delete only an entry confirmed to be outdated. Do not erase all network settings on the phone: this may remove saved Wi-Fi networks without resolving the problem.

Always-on VPN

After a stable manual test, you can consider an always-on connection. Android system settings may show an “Always-on VPN” switch next to the VPN profile. Google notes that this system setting may be unavailable for a VPN configured through an app.

Do not enable always-on mode as the first step. If the profile or server stops working, internet access may be restricted until the connection is restored or the setting is disabled. Use the option to block connections without the VPN with particular care.

On a work phone, the VPN may apply only to apps in the work profile. Corporate policies are changed by the administrator, not the user.

If Android Stops the VPN Client

If the connection drops after the screen is locked or after several minutes, note when the disconnection occurs. Then check battery and background activity restrictions specifically for the VPN client, Data Saver, and the phone manufacturer’s settings.

Do not disable battery optimization for every app. Change only the setting for the verified client if its developer recommends doing so. Also make sure that another VPN client, antivirus app, or network filter is not trying to create a second connection.

If the Connection Cannot Be Established

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Disconnect the VPN and check the regular internet connection.
  2. Check the access expiry date.
  3. Compare the app and configuration format with the instructions.
  4. Remove the incomplete import, but keep working profiles.
  5. Try connecting through another network.
  6. Record the exact error message.

Do not change the server, protocol, DNS, and app at the same time: after several changes, it becomes impossible to identify the cause. For dropped connections, endless connection attempts, and errors, use “Why a VPN Does Not Work”.

How to Update or Remove a Profile Safely

Before updating, find out whether the new link replaces the old configuration or creates an additional profile. After importing, check the new entry and only then delete the outdated one.

To stop using the VPN, disconnect it in the client. For a system profile, open “Settings → Network & internet → VPN,” select the relevant network settings, and remove it. Uninstalling the app and canceling a paid subscription are different actions: check the payment procedure separately in the store or the service account.

What to Tell Support

If your own checks do not resolve the issue, prepare:

  • the phone model;
  • the Android version;
  • the VPN client name and version;
  • the network type: Wi-Fi or mobile;
  • the stage at which the error occurs;
  • the exact message text;
  • the time when it last worked successfully.

Remove the key, QR code, email address, password, and payment details from screenshots. The confirmed scope of access is described in “What Giga Insider Includes”, and the current contact channel is listed on the support page.
