This article is needed after choosing a script. If you're still deciding whether you need a VPN for work, a public Wi-Fi, multiple devices, or infrequent connections, start with selection tree. Here the task is different: to compare two or three suitable options based on the same measurable characteristics.
A good VPN is not necessarily the fastest, cheapest or most famous. Quality is determined by verifiable properties. There is no universal winner, but a single matrix allows us to eliminate weak and opaque options.
The main principle is to compare facts, not epithets. “Military grade”, “absolute anonymity” and “lightning speed” say nothing without describing the protocol, data policy, infrastructure and plan conditions.
1. Record the required result
Write down the result being verified: the desired system is connected, the work resource is opened, the connection is restored after changing the network, and the stated number of devices works simultaneously. The result must allow a “yes” or “no” answer.
This entry helps you avoid overpaying for unnecessary features. NCSC emphasizes that the need for a VPN depends on the network architecture and the benefits that are actually needed. If the task is not defined, comparison quickly devolves into advertising.
2. Support your devices
Check not only the presence of the system logo, but also the minimum OS version, installation method and the number of simultaneous devices. Good documentation explains which client is needed and how to revoke access from the old device. If a service claims to support a router, there should be separate instructions and a list of compatible options.
For Android, the official path may include an application or a saved system profile; this is described in Google help. Windows also has a built-in client, but requires a compatible VPN type and exact settings from the service - see Microsoft instructions.
3. Clear protocol
The service should at least explain the family of protocols used and the clients supported. The name of the protocol alone does not guarantee the correct configuration, but the lack of information interferes with the assessment. Modern options have a public specification or documentation. For example, the developers of WireGuard publish a description of key exchange and cryptographic primitives, and NIST covers IPsec in detail.
Do not manually select a protocol based on ratings from the Internet if the service provides a ready-made configuration. The server and client must maintain consistent parameters.
4. Data Policy
Look for specifics: what technical logs are created, whether the original IP is stored, how long the records exist, who has access to them, where the company is registered and how to delete the data. The wording “we do not sell personal data” does not answer the question of whether it is collected and used for analytics.
For the mobile client, check the privacy and permissions card. Apple requires disclosure of app data practices and third party components in App Store Connect. This is the developer's declaration, so please match it to the full policy on the site.
5. Origin of the application
A good VPN provides direct links to official stores or a signed installer. The developer's name is the same on the website and in the app listing. There is no need to disable system protection or download a “modified” build.
On Android, leave Play Protect enabled. On iPhone, be careful with configuration profiles and check their origin. On your computer, look at the publisher's digital signature.
6. Updates and vulnerability management
View the client's version history. Regular updates show that the service maintains compatibility and fixes bugs. Having a status page, a failure notification channel, and a clear process for reporting a vulnerability is helpful. However, frequent version changes do not in themselves equal quality - the content of the updates and the response to problems are important.
For a current system, compare not only the application version date, but also the end of support for the OS itself. A separate VPN compatibility in 2026 checklist helps you check this layer before installation.
Ask what will happen if the client is outdated: will it warn, update automatically, or continue connecting. For production scenarios, a controlled transition is important so that the update does not stop access for the entire team.
7. Protection against traffic leakage
Some applications offer connection blocking when the tunnel breaks, always-on VPN, or DNS management. Function names vary and behavior varies by OS. Find out whether the rules apply to all applications and what happens when you change Wi-Fi to a mobile network.
Don't assume a feature is included just because it's mentioned on a website. Check it on your device according to the official instructions. If the requirement is critical, request a written description from support.
8. Speed and stability
Measure speed under the same conditions: one device, one source channel, close time and multiple repetitions. Compare latency, loading and sending before and after enablement. One result does not reflect peak times and different routes.
A good service does not promise a fixed speed without conditions. The result is affected by the distance to the server, load, protocol, provider and device performance. For video calls, stable latency is more important, and for backups, sending speed is more important.
9. Access support and restoration
Before paying, check whether there is a clear support channel and what data is needed for diagnosis. The answer should explain how to safely pass the error without revealing the key. It is important to know how to replace the configuration if the device is lost or the secret is published.
Also check account recovery. If it depends on one device or communication channel, provide a fallback option. The support page should have up-to-date contacts and basic instructions.
10. Price and subscription rules
Compare the total cost for the same period, number of devices and set of functions. Find currency, tax, auto-renewal, trial period, refund and cancellation method. A long-term discount only makes sense after checking the quality on your devices.
Evaluate the free plan using the same criteria. Price is no substitute for transparency. Details about such models are in the article “Free VPN”.
Final solution table
Complete the table for each candidate. Use only three statuses: “confirmed”, “not suitable”, “not documented”. The last mark is better than a guess.
| Criterion | What to record | Minimum confirmation | | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------- | | Problem | Work network, public Wi‑Fi or personal use | The script is written in one phrase | | Devices | Systems, versions and number of simultaneous connections | There are current instructions | | Protocol | Supported connection method | Name and compatible client listed | | Data | Logs, retention periods, deletion | There is a specific policy | | Loading | Client source and publisher | Direct link and matching developer | | Updates | Version date and notification channel | Client supported | | Tunnel rupture | Traffic behavior after disconnection | Device tested | | Speed | Delay, loading, sending, breaks | At least three measurements under the same conditions | | Support | Channel, answer, key replacement | Test question answered | | Payment | Final price, renewal, cancellation | Conditions found before payment |
Do not put statuses into an abstract rating. Critical “not documented” by owner, data processing or payment cancellation is more important than high speed in one test.
Red flags
Remove a service from your shortlist if it requires you to disable antivirus or system checks, distributes a client from another publisher, does not name the owner, hides the regular price after the trial period, or promises absolute anonymity. Another serious signal is a request to send the full key or password in an open chat. The absence of an independent audit does not in itself prove a problem, but a fictitious mention of an audit without a link is not proof.
A good VPN is a service that predictably solves your problem, supports the devices you need, and is honest about its limitations. After filling out the matrix, save the confirmations, look for installation instructions in the devices section, and the remaining analyzes on the articles page.
